Does Your Company Have A Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Policy?

By admin | June 4th, 2015

Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) management is an ongoing challenge experienced by the majority of American businesses. Historically, companies provided commissioned devices but as personal devices became increasingly popular, employers began facing new challenges associated with their integration into professional networks.

Bring Your Own Device BYOD

Although technology has made employees more efficient and enabled then to work anywhere and anytime, the challenges of managing these tools without compromising the organization’s health or without alienating employees is a constant struggle.

This challenge is not exclusive to employers. Many employees are faced with the conundrum of how to adopt and integrate new technology without violating company policies. A great example is when companies provide office workstations while encouraging employees to work from home using unmanaged devices where multi-tasking between personal and business tasks overlap.

So how are business leaders handling this situation?

With Bring Your Own Device policies.

These policies are oftentimes inexpensive, simple to implement and allow employees to safely utilize their personal equipment (phones, tablets, and laptops) for business tasks. Because these are still personal devices, policies and their enforcement are needed in order to avoid the risks associated with a BYOD environment.

One such inexpensive simple safeguard of a BYOD policy is the requirement to have a password policy restricting access to non- compliant users. There should be an organizational password policy requiring minimum lengths, a degree of complexity and a requirement to be changed at regular intervals. Companies can also implement a number of different software solutions to remotely manage and troubleshoot common BYOD problem items.

At TSI, we provide our clients with a number of options to efficiently and effectively manage employees’ personal devices and safely enable them to integrate today’s technology into the workplace.   We find that implementing simple precautions such as password policies as well as clearly communicating the risks associated with BYOD to employees are a great cost effective start toward a more secure, productive work experience.
